JERUSALEM: An Israeli parliamentary committee on Monday stripped an Arab-Israeli MP of more rights over her participation in a 2010
flotilla seeking to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza, she told AFP.
Haneen Zuabi, an MP with the left-wing Arab party Balad, said the Knesset's Ethics Committee had voted in favour of stripping her
of additional rights just over a year after it first sanctioned her for participating in the flotilla.
The new restrictions prohibit Zuabi from attending Knesset debates for the rest of this parliamentary session, which concludes on
August 4.
"Despite the gravity of the event, the committee decided to content itself with excluding MP Zuabi from meetings of the Knesset
plenum and the committees," the text of the decision said.
Zuabi, who told AFP she would still be allowed to cast votes and attend the meetings of committees who were discussing her
involvement in the flotilla, condemned the new measures.
"The decision to keep me away from discussions in the Knesset is a political decision and a reflection of the right-wing majority,"
she told AFP.
"The fascist right wing is determining the legal boundaries in the state of Israel and punishes
politically those who go outside of the fascist right-wing consensus."
Zuabi said her participation in the flotilla, which ended in disaster when Israeli commandos stormed the ships, killing nine
Turkish activists, was a legitimate political act.
"I took part in the flotilla as part of a struggle that is humanitarian, moral and politically just, in defence of a besieged
people," she said.
"My actions were legal, but if my actions were illegal, there are courts that can judge them."
Last July, Israel's parliament voted to strip Zuabi of her diplomatic passport and parliamentary funding for legal defence.
They also voted in favour of taking away her parliamentary privilege to leave the country even if she is wanted in connection with
a felony.
Zuabi challenged the restrictions before Israel's Supreme Court in March, arguing that the sanctions were "political persecution,"
but the court has yet to rule on the case.
